John Stuart Mill was born on May 20, 1806, in London, to James and Harriet Mill. He was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters. Forced to take care of a large family, James Mill achieved relative material well-being only at the end of his life, becoming a prominent official of the East India Company. In doing so, he devoted his life to raising his children. It primarily applied to his eldest son, John, who became the object of a unique experiment in the history of pedagogy. He knew neither school, nor university, nor home teachers. His only teacher was his father, and from the age of eight, John Stewart himself began teaching his younger brothers and sisters.
